Important Message on Conduct
Hey Wrasa Swimmers and parents,
The season is going by very quickly and Regional's is very soon upon us. Swimmers are getting many best times, and seem to be doing a great job at being very focused on winning races and swimming fast. The intensity of every race, both in heats and finals, is being turned up as we approach the important meets of our season, and as that happens it is important that we all reflect on our own B.C.S.S.A Code of conduct for swimmers, parents, officials, and coaches, with respect to how we conduct ourselves at swim meets and at practice. One of the most beneficial life skills that swimmers, parents, and coaches can all learn from competitive swimming is good sportsmanship.
At swim meets it is important that we all encourage all athletes whether they are Wrasa swimmers, or our competition from other clubs. This can be done in many simple ways:
- Wishing our teammates and competition good luck before the race
- Not intimidating or harassing the competition in marshalling or behind the blocks (or anywhere for that matter) before a race
- Building positive relationships with all competitors and teammates.
- Congratulating all athletes after races (whether you won the race, or lost the race)
- Winning and losing with class
I also have a few notes for parents on the same subject with a focus on supporting your child at meets.
- Support your child - the coaches will do the coaching, you be the parent. When taking children to marshalling this can be stressful for both the parent and child. Please do not use this time for last minute coaching. Instead be supportive in making sure your child is prepared with caps, goggles, water. As your child gets older they will be ready to go to marshalling on their own. Give them this independence. Also at Regionals and Provincials parents will not be allowed in the marshalling area, I would like all swimmers to get used to being on their own and focusing on their races.
- Talking times - again , coaches are setting goals for the swimmers helping them to achieve their best. Swimmers need to focus on what their coaches have told them to do, please do not distract them by talking about other swimmers etc. (something along the lines of individual sport, goals, best times etc.)
- Supporting your swimmers after their races - After races the swimmers will experience a variety of emotions related to how they preformed in their event. As the parent it will be important for you to be supportive of your child during this time, and to help them work through their experiences if necessary. When a child is unhappy with their performance the role of the parents should be to comfort them and help them move on to focus on their next race. It is not helpful for parents to get mad at their children after their events and say things such as "you didn't try hard enough". This type of conversation is one that happens between the swimmer and the coach. Oftentimes when parents become too over involved in coaching, the children end up quitting their sport because they do not feel they can meet the expectations of their coach, parents, and their own internal expectations at the same time.
Our club has been known for being great competitors, and excelling in area's of sportsmanship and teamwork in and out of the pool. I hope that in the coming weeks our club can lead our region and province in those area's.
Along with this email I have attached a PDF for parents (10 Commandments for a Swim Parent), and a link to our website for everyone to read our Code of Conduct.
I look forward to seeing you all at the pool,
Head Coach Ryan

Post Super 7 and Development Meet
We had some excellent swims over the weekend at the Ladner Super 7 swim meet at Watermania. There were many best times and lots of good racing. The mixed relays were lots of fun, with many of our younger WRASA swimmers racing with the seniors, and even with some of the coaches! Great job to all of our swimmers!
A few notes for upcoming weeks:
No More Deck Entries
There will be no more late entries allowed for swim meets. Over the first few meets, I have allowed a few swimmers to sign-up late because we are not all used to using the sign-up in the binder yet. From this point forward I urge all families to sign-up for meets in the sign-up binder on or before the deadlines. Please be aware of the deadline dates, as not all of them fall on Thursdays (last week's deadline was Tuesday). If you tell your coach verbally that you would like to sign up for a meet, but do not sign up in the binder, you take the risk of not being signed up for the meet.
Heats & Finals Meets
Very soon we will be at the point in the season when swim meets have both heats and finals. Please be prepared to stay for finals for all of these meets. When you sign up for these meets, keep in mind that you must commit to possibly staying at the meet until the conclusion of finals.
New Practice Schedule
Next week is the start of our new swim schedule. The schedule is posted on our website, and it includes dryland in each practice time. Please familiarize yourselves with the new schedule as there are many changes in group practice times from the last schedule.

SWIM MEET SIGN UP
A reminder to all families to sign up for the Richmond Icebreaker meet. The deadline to sign up is this Thursday! The meet sign-up binder can be found at the picnic table, or in the trailer on the left hand side.
SAFETY NOTE:
A note to all swimmers and parents to make sure that you are always wearing footwear at Sunnyside park. Wether you are wearing running shoes for dryland, or sandals after practice, please make sure you always have shoes on. Coaches check every day to make sure the park is safe and there is no glass on the ground, but it is easy to miss things. It is very important for safety reasons that nobody ever walks on bare feet.
INTERMEDIATE COURTENAY PRACTICE CHANGE
Practice for Int. Courtenay on Wednesday mornings has now been extended to an hour and a half. Practice will start at 6:00am and finish at 7:30am starting next week.
May 5, 2010
Git and Development schedule for May 17 has been changed. Practices Monday through Thursday will now begin at 3:15pm, dryland at 3:00pm.
-Ryan
Please make sure you bring running shoes to all dryland sessions - no sandals, skateboard shoes, etc.
-----------------
Welcome back all new and returning Guppies!
Lastly our first Sunnyside schedule and Crescent Park dry land schedule will also be sent out and added to the website. Please make sure that you get to the pool 15 minutes early each day for dry land. It is very important that every swimmer is properly warmed up before entering the water to avoid injury. It will also make life easier for all of our coaches to have everyone there on time. We will be having dry land at the beginning of May to compensate for the pool hours that we normally would have had. The dry land workouts will be held at Crescent Park, and the swimmers can meet at the parking lots on the upper fields [132nd and 26th avenue].
I will also be adding extra dry land that some groups will have based on coach discretion, please check your email inbox and schedules on the website for any updates.
I look forward to seeing you all at the pool very soon,
Ryan Slater
Head Coach

-----------------
I have now released the group lists for this season. I feel that every group is very strong this summer, and that each swimmer will be challenged in his/her group. I'd like to remind everyone that I will be making no group changes until the Richmond Icebreaker meet, unless I feel like there is a safety concern.
I'd like to welcome all of you back this summer, for what I know will be one of our best seasons yet! I hope you all had a great off-season, filled with weekends that were not spent under a canopy (although I'm sure you all missed that part of your week). I am extremely excited about this summer, this being my first as our club's head coach. I will have a hands on approach and I look forward to working with all of our swimmers and parents.
We have put together a great group of coaches and they are all very enthusiastic about coaching and looking forward to all the success and fun we are going to have. This season's coaching staff has a lot of familiar faces - some are returning from last season and some are from our very own senior group. And one that our intermediate swimmers will recognize as their old Guppy in training coach!
Returning this summer is Courtenay Mulhern, who will be our intermediate group coach as well as a mentor for our other Intermediate coaches. Courtenay has been WRASA's head coach for the past few seasons and I'm sure most of you know her well. I'm glad to have her back as she will bring a lot of experience and a very strong technical background to the pool deck. Also returning from last years coach roster is Mark Stewart. Mark will be coaching a Junior group this summer, after assisting with the GIT/Development group last season.
New to our coaching staff this year is Stacy Leson, Trevor Tindle, Valerie Ward, Kevin Mason, Shelby Slater, Kirsten Moore, and Ashley Boucher-Cymbala. You will recognize Stacy, Trevor, Valerie, Kevin, Shelby, and Kirsten from our Senior group last summer, they also gained experience coaching our swimmers over winter maintenance this winter. They are all first year coaches with the exception of Stacy, having coached with PSW for over a year now. All of these coaches bring a lot of enthusiasm, and energy to the pool deck and are very eager to work with our young swimmers. After a 4 year absence from our club, Ashley Cymbala-Boucher is back this summer to coach a senior group. Ashley has coached with PSW for the past few seasons working with 2 of our province's best swim coaches.
I am very confident in this summer's coaches and I know they will all do a great job in developing all of the swimmers in our club.
April 25, 2010
Please also bring a water bottle.
Seniors please bring a small towel (we will be using them for an exercise and also to wipe sweat out of our eyes).
- Ryan
We will be meeting at the upper fields (by the baseball diamonds) at 132nd street and 26th avenue.
Sunday Dryland | South Surrey Indoor Pool
With the added pool space on Sundays at South Surrey indoor pool, we will now hold dryland on the gravel field next to the pool. Please bring your swim gear if you are in a groups training at 5-6 on Sunday.
